When I was a youth in England the thought of owning a boat was a dream that you never thought would come true.

When I got to be 40 I moved to Powell River, bought a Catalina 27, raced and cruised it with my kids and then also with Winnie. We all had terrific fun gunk holing around the coast right here on our doorstep.

Then I cruised a bigger boat to Mexico (I was going around the world but I (in sailors terms) swallowed the anchor. That means I quit in Mexico and came home.

However we did realize the dream of our lives.

Whilst I was sitting in the sun in Mexico I was reading a Cruising magazine, “The best places to cruise in the world” was the article.

#1 was somewhere out of reach, I can’t remember where???

#2 was the Pacific North West. Yes right here, wow!!.

Now we have a new Harbour, we have our boats back in the water and we are embarking on a new cruising season.

One where you just go down to the harbour right on your doorstep and within 20 minutes you are out on the water with the motor on or the sails up.

Are we lucky or what?

The yacht Club is going full steam ahead, and I know you have heard from Gerard, our Commodore, all the great things that have happened and are happening.

We have a super Club Executive who have worked very hard to get things going.

The rental of fun sailing dinghy’s when you want them
The cruising
The fun nights
And we are going to start again with the Full Keel Racing

We took on a little debt to get things moving but the repayment is in full swing and our financial situation is great. Thank in no small way to Deidre our social/cruising director also taking on the mantle of fund Raiser.

I know you want to be part of the action, the people that make things happen.

There are a lot of vibrant motivating people in the club.

The Annual General Meeting is held in March every year; to comply with the Societies Act for Non Profit Organizations we have to hold elections at that time.

The first weekend of December saw excellent weather for all the Christmas activities taking place. Sunday was sunny and warm and a great day for a parade. Members of the yacht club got together and decorated a boat and truck to represent the yacht club. Santa and Mrs. Clause navigated Westview Avenue with club members and children on and off the boat. The 2011 Santa Clause Parade was well received by the community as evidenced by the smiles on the childrens' faces.

The Powell River Yacht Club's Float was the only float with FOUR BEAUTIFUL LITTLE GIRLS as Santa's Helpers and Ambassadors of the yacht club.

2011 Christmas Party

The 2011 Powell River Yacht Club Christmas Party was hosted by Ray and Robin on Friday, December 2nd. Twenty five members enjoyed a delightful evening of fellowship, good food and adventure. Blake and Susan shared tales and photos of their recent sailing exploits off the coast of Argentina. Later, Kim and Leslie showcased their sailing trip to and from Hawaii. Both presentations were enjoyed and many dreams of off shore sailing were re-ignited.

The Sponsor of the Month for December is Robin Morrison. Robin showcased her business Wellness, Energy Services providing healthy options through an integrated body work program. Robin specializes in relaxation message and therapies. The monthly activity prize was won by Barry Bennett. Contact Robin at 604 483-6759 to book your appointment in advance to avoid disappointment.

Our traditional gift exchange was as entertaining as ever. Gifts ranged from the new to the old, the useful to the useless but no one seemed to mind. Fun was had by all.

Powell River was delighted to see the traditional Parade of Lights return to her shore line after missing a year in 2010. The parade was a great success with six decorated boats sailing up the coast from Grief Point to past Willingdon Beach with the Coast Guard following close behind.

Both the audience on land and the crews on the water welcomed the warm, dry, calm weather which made for a comfortable parade. After the parade, the skippers and their crews met at the Canadian Legion Hall to warm up and enjoy tea and snacks provided by Quality Foods. The Powell River Yacht Club THANKS the Skippers and Crews, the People of Powell River and the sponsors that helped make this year's event the wonderful experience it was. The 2011 Halloween Party was a scene of Royalty. Hosted by the very Royal Anne who treated her guests to Bat Juice and a Wicked Remedy. Distinguished guests included The King and Queen of Hearts, Genghis Khan, Cleopatra and the King of Japan in his ceremonial Samurai Warrior wardrobe attended by his geisha hand maiden. It was an evening of spectacular costumes, good fun, good friends old and new.

Gorillas in the Mist

GORRILLAS IN THE MIST. Well not quite. There may or may not have been gorillas out there. The day scheduled for our club sail around Harwood Island began with the Beach Gardens' Marina blanketed in a thick, pea soup fog, light wind and a forecast that offered little hope for an early change. By noon, the day had changed into a beautiful day. Unfortunately, the crews were off doing other things in this wonderful place we call home. Even the birds were grounded!

Wow! The Junior Sailing Team went to the Pumpkin Bowl on the weekend, performed against some stiff competition and placed in the top 10. The 420 results are below. The Opti sailors also competed showing very well. With a 3rd place in the Opti sailing, an 8th and a 10th place in the 420 class, and a lot of fun, the team was impressive. Stay tuned for photos.

Our first annual not quite black tie evening was a lot of fun. Laura Kew of Squatters Creek Wines showcased a fine selection of red and white wines that we all enjoyed. Members brought a wide selection of cheeses to accompany the wines. ...Squatters Creek Wines was the club sponsor for September and the winner of the monthly activity prize was Randy and Dorothy Kirk. Max Ferrier, Vice Commodore, was recognised for his stellar efforts as project manager and dock designer. Thanks Max! On Monday, August 22nd, a team of yacht club members and volunteers from Powell River Rotary and other supportive organizations lent helping hands to construct the dingy dock. The dingy dock will contribute to dinghy sailing in Powell River for years to come. The Powell River Yacht Club Youth Sailing Quality Food Fund Raiser was a spectacular success with mustard on every ones faces and shirts. It was a fun time in the front of Quality foods. The kids raised $406.00 for the youth sailing program in 3 hours. WAY TO GO KIDS! Thanks to Bruce and Sandy of Quality Foods for supporting this endeavor. The Powell River Yacht Club summer 2011 Opti Training has come to an end. The first week saw 11 Powell River youth successfully complete Novice Opti Training. The weather during the second week was a bit of a challenge but at the end of the week, 10 youth successfully completed the Advanced Opti Training program. The youth had an enjoyable time on and off the water with Powell River Yacht Club's own Julia Schuab instructing. Thanks Julia and everyone that made this year's traing program such a success.

The 2011 Lamb Barbeque was held at Palm Beach Regional Park. The venue was new to the club for this event and proved to be very successful. The commodore did go to sea but it was on a chartered 40 foot Beneteau on a week long cruise n learn. The crew was from Saskatchewan and were quite excited to see the whales and enjoyed the hike on Cortez Island. It was a privledge to showcase our beautiful coastal area and the whales were a "plus". The First Annual Summer Solstice BBQ was held at Willingdon Beach. The great time was augmented by the visit of a large pod of dolphins playing off the beach. Two Activity Prizes were awarded. The May Activity Prize drawn for the Spring Flower Cruise to Vivian was presented to Tom Wheeler. Breakwater Books and Quality Foods were the May sponsors. The 2011 Agerine Passage Race got off to an excellent start with the Powell River Yacht Club hosting the Comox Bay Sailing Club at a barbeque / Skippers' Meeting sponsored by Quality Foods. The race commenced Sunday morning at 9:00 just off the Westview Viewpoint. The fleet sailed off towards Algerine Passage under light wind and onwards to the finish line at Comox Harbour. The Powell River team competed well and enjoyed the total experience of sailing and representing the Powell River Yacht Club. While not in the prizes, the fellowship on board and at the awards banquet in Comox all added up to a very successful weekend of sailing. The skipper and crew are already planning for next year's race, and already other Powell River Skippers are looking forward to be part of this traditional fun event. Sunday May 14th saw 10 hearty club members cruise over to Vivian Island to take in the spring flowers. This year, the gross number of flowers were exceptional. It must be due to the cool, moist weather we have been experiencing. The group shared a picnic lunch on the top of the island before spreading out to explore the island and enjoy the many different kinds and bounty of flowers. It was a very nice day in spite of the rain that did catch the explorers on the island.

18 brave souls showed up promptly at 10:00 raring to go in spite of the 3 degree temperatures and snow at 08:00 am. Their courage was rewarded with sunny skies and brisk breeze and wonderful sailing in paradise. The skippers and crew sailed over to Van Anda, hiked up the hill to the Texada Inn and enjoyed the ambiance and hospitality of Dan and Mariane De Vita. After lunch, the crews made their way back to the harbour for an awesome return sail to Powell River. What a wonderful start to the cruising season. Thanks skippers for hosting club members on you boats.

Cruise to Squirrel Cove and Refuge Cove

An awesome time was had by all. The Mexican Train running through Refuge Cove was the highlight of Saturday evening evening augmented by the wine and five gals and one guy. Does life get better? Hot showers, morning coffee and breakfast overlooking the cove leaves nothing to be desired. This followed a spectacular sail from Powell River followed by a sail to Teakerne Arm and visions of a boat from the past. Enjoy the video.

WOODEN SCHOONER MYSTERY

I hereby wish to offer a reward of $100 (... or a bottle of high quality rum – whichever you may prefer ... :-)) ... to the first person who can solve a mystery about what actually happened to a lovely 43 foot wooden schooner known as “Phoenix No. 1” that sailed among BC's Gulf Islands in the late 1970's.

Here is some background information to hopefully help you solve this mystery. I was once the owner of “Phoenix No. 1” when she resided in Halifax, Nova Scotia. In 1978, I sold her to a gentleman named “Hank Scholtens” who shipped her by CN Railway to British Columbia. Mr. Scholtens kept her in the Gulf Islands for several years for both pleasure sailing and clam digging trips. Sometime in the early 1980's, he sold her to another gentleman who took possession of her in Lund, BC, and shortly thereafter, it was reported that she hit a reef somewhere in the Gulf Islands or possibly near Iona beach. Rumour has it that this unfortunate accident was reported in a local newspaper article.

The “mystery” is what actually happened to her after hitting that reef ??? And what is the name of the gentleman who bought her just before this accident? And perhaps find a copy of the newspaper article. Did she sink never to sail again? Or was she raised and restored? Perhaps she is still happily sailing along the BC coastline today? Maybe she's resting peacefully in a boat yard today? I would dearly like to discover more about what happened to “Phoenix No. 1” ! (Note: Her name may have been changed by any subsequent owners.) A picture is attached that may help you to identify her shape and size.

2010 Algerine Passage Race

The 2010 Algerine Passage Race was not a typical Algerine Passage Race as I remember them. The racers participating in the Algerine Passage Race have been becalmed too many times to mention. The crews entered this year were in for a surprise. The race was from Comox to Powell River on Sunday, May 23rd. The crew of Magic Karpet III sailed over to Comox Harbour on Saturday, May 22nd under favourable winds all the way. The crew had a very nice relaxed sail with all the sail area up with Magic Karpet III at hull speed for the majority of the trip.
Once secure at the dock, the crew was off for a stroll around the wonderful Comox Harbour looking at the various boats and visiting with the interesting people always found on docks. The crew was fortunate to find a prawn boat with a friendly face from Powell River acting as crew. A package of very large prawns was purchased before moving on for more exploration of Comox. On the return to Magic Karpet III, a delicious dinner of prawns and lamb chops was served to the hungry crew.
The crew woke to calm skies, Sunday morning. The weather appeared suspect as the crew motored out to the start line. At 08:55, the start sequence was started under light winds. With the raising of the class flag the start sequence was initiated. Quickly the four minute flag was raised as the 11 sailboats jockeyed for position. The four minute flag was lowered at one minute before the start with the boats mixing it up at the line. Suddenly, the horn went as the start flag went up and the race for Powell River was on.
The wind gradually built from light winds to moderate winds throughout the morning as the sailboats raced to the Grant’s Reef Buoy. The sailboats were on a broad reach to Grant’s Reef, tightening up and going onto close hauled as they left the marker behind and started beating their way to the finish line off the Grief Point Lighthouse. By this time, the wind had built to approximately 20 knots and the sailboats were heeled over to their maximum. By 17:00 all the boats were secure at the Beach Gardens Marina and the crews were preparing for the awards banquet held at the Savoury Bight. All were in high spirits after meeting the challenges of an adrenalin rushing battle between wind and wave. The Savoury Bight presented a very nice banquet for the hungry crews. It was an excellent weekend for the racers participating in the annual Algerine Passage Race with all the racers looking forward to next year.
All the racers thank Kim Brown for his persistence in the choppy conditions as he took times at the finish line on Kindred Spirit. Thanks also go to Laura Kew for arranging a delicious banquet hosted at the Savoury Bight.

Spring has Arrived

To kick of the boating season, five boats from the Powell River Yacht Club sailed out to experience the beauty of Vivian Island on Mothers’ Day. The day was magnificent with the sun shining, warm breezes for the sailors and relatively flat seas for the power boaters. Boaters anchored off the shores of the island; rowed to shore and explored the island. Eagles flew over head, many species of birds squawked their welcome to company , and seals and sea lions swam in the water nearby.
The 16 yacht club members were delighted to find more than a dozen species of plants in flower on this day. The flowers ranged in colour from simple but beautiful white tufted saxifrage to the beautiful chocolate lily with yellows, blues and purple blossoms everywhere. The colours were augmented by fragrances wafting over the island as the adventurers tip-toed through the beauty trying not to damage the fragile ecosystem of the island.
The boaters completed the adventure with a gentle sail to their perspective berths at the end of the day. We do live in paradise. Spring has arrived in all her glory.

8 boats on a cruise over to Van Anda.
The plan was to cruise over, have lunch and sail back. The smart people hoisted their sails on the way to Van Anda because, as often happens, the winds were severely lacking on the way back.
Those of us who were headed towards Powell River watched in amazement as "Aiolis" and "Marimba" glided off toward Blubber Bay and Campbell River.
What were they thinking?
I don't know, but they won the race.
Ray's new "Summer Wind" came in a respectable third. These are unofficial results-I don't know about handicaps and such.Some of us had to motor home to rescue housebound dogs.
And one of us needed a tow.

Still it was great fun.

Catalina-San Juan Race

Sunday September 20^th broke with a beautiful sunny sky. The water was like glass as it reflected the islands and beaches of the Sunshine Coast. It was an idealic picture of paradise. Unless of course you are the Race Chair of the Powell River Sailing Club. With no change in the near future, plans were changed and six yachts and their crew were readied for a trip to Van Anda for lunch. As per usual, the food was only surpassed by the excellent company at the Van Anda Hotel. As the crews relaxed in the autumn sun, the breeze picked up to a bit of a frenzy and yachts laid lazily at the Van Anda Sailing Club docks. After lunch, the crews returned to the their perspective boats for a spritely race to Willingdon Beach. A rabbit start was successfully executed and the teams sailed offunder 8 to 10 knots of wind towards Westview. The sailing was simply awesome! The teams had high expectations of finishing under this brisk breeze only to have a finish pulled from their grasp within a mile from the finish line. The crews put their sails away under a beautiful sunny, warm afternoon and headed over to Wendy’s for an evening of good food and good company. We truly do live in paradise!

Quadra Island cruise

We left Powell River on Friday July 10 at 5pm and sailed part of the way to Finn Bay where we spent the night at the provincial dock.

We were welcome by Stephen, Barbra and Jasper Mohan who gave us a tour of the blue house they live in on Sevilla Island.

What a peaceful place!

We left Finn Bay Saturday at 9:30 am and sailed around Hernando. When the wind died we motored the rest of the way to Quadra. We arrived at Heriot Bay at 3pm and checked if other boats from the sailing club were there but did not find anyone. We decided to anchor in Drew Harbour. The water was a little fresh to swim but we did anyway. The beer was cold and refreshing at the Heriot Inn. After a quiet evening and night we motored and sailed part of the way back on Sunday. When we reached Atrevida buoy the southeast wind picked up and not just a little, up to probably 25 knots. Quidam was bouced around but brought us back to the harbour safely.

Introduction to Sailing

A day of instruction in the classroom was followed by a day in the harbour. Due to rather high winds it was decided not to venture out on the water.
Walking the harbour is always fun with lots to see.

Barb, Stephen and Jasper Mohan have been restoring their sailboat in Lund since 2005.

Built in England in1899, this Bristol Channel pilot cutter is one of only an estimated 17 surviving.

They outline in detail the history of their boat, and the steps they have taken in its restoration. It is fascinating reading, and we look forward to seeing it in August.

MOSS Childrens Program

Once again the Powell River Sailing Club is sponsoring 2 weeks of sailing classes for children.

School kids can learn about boating safety and how to sail while getting wet and having fun right at your doorstep!

The BC Sailing Mobile Optimist Sailing School (MOSS) Program and participating host clubs from communities around the province are offering an introductory sailing program for school classes from Kindergarten through Grade 6. Classes of up to 30 students can participate in an educational and fun one-day session exposing them to the exciting world of sailing.

Children aged 6 – 15* will learn the basics of sailing in a unique environment focusing on fun and boating safety. Participants will learn some terminology, knots, and how to sail by means of games and activities both on and off the water. Seven-foot Optimist sailboats as well as two-person kayaks will be used in the program. By the end of the course, students will be able to safely sail and kayak on their own! In addition to these skills, the program develops confidence and leadership in its participants.

No experience is necessary and you don't have to be a member.

Professionally trained and Canadian Yachting Association Certified coaches will ensure every experience is a positive one.

Powell River Lions Club is paying for 2 $250.00 bursaries for 2 children to attend these camps.

The Algerine Cup

The Annual Algerine Passage Race went without a hitch again this year.

Aiolis was the only Powell River boat competing.

The May long weekend Sunday proved to be an average day for this date with light winds that propelled the racing boats across the start line and out towards Grants Reef bell buoy. The light air stayed up until the fleet rounded Grants Reef Buoy but died shortly after.
The fleet bobbed and clawed its way to the finish line off Comox Harbour. A south east wind did finally build enough to push the fleet across the finish line. As the first boat across the finish line, Aiolis crossed the finish line with only minutes to spare before the race was called due to the time limit of the race.

The awards banquet was well attended and enjoyed by all. Congratulations Blake on winning line honours and finishing fourth in challenging winds.

First you Have to Row a Little Boat

Since its inception in 1967, The Powell River Sailing Club has welcomed new members interested in learning to sail, racing, cruising, or just getting together with enthusiasts of the sport.

If you are new to sailing, you do not need to own a boat in order to participate.
Members either race their sailboats or crew for others.
This is a great way to learn to sail.
